THIS EAGLE WAS FOUND IN BUCKSPORT,MAINE. IT DATES TO THE LATE 18TH.CENTURY OR EARLY 19TH. CENTURY. THIS FULL BODY EAGLE WAS CARVED FROM PINE WOOD AND LIKELY BY A SKILLED SHIP FIGUREHEAD CARVER. THE HEAD IS APPLIED TO THE BODY AS ARE THE WINGS. THE EAGLE IS CLUTCHING A DOCUMENT, LIKELY THE CONSTITUTION. PAINTED IN THE COLORS OF THE AMERICAN FLAG,RED,WHITE AND BLUE WITH PAINTED STARS. THIS SURFACE WAS APPLIED OVER ORIGINAL GILT AND WAS PROBABLY DONE FOR THE CENTENNIAL OF 1876. IT IS 54 1/2" X 33'.IT WAS ON LOAN TO THE FARNSWORTH MUSEUM, ROCKLAND, MAINE, FROM 1998 UNTIL 2005.
