CARVED 8 GIG HALF HULLS IN CASE

VERY WELL EXECUTED CASE OF 8 HAND CARVED GIGS. GIGS ARE FAST LITTLE WORKING BOATS USED TO FERRY PILOTS,SALAVAGE AND LIFESAVING. THEY WERE ROWED BY A CREW OF SIX, MAKING THEM FAST. POWER ENGINES REPLACED THEM IN THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AND MOST WERE DISCARDED. I PURCHASED THIS FROM A DEALER WHO HAD THEM FOR 20 YEARS AND HE BOUGHT THEM FROM THE GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER OF THE MAN WHO CARVED THEM. HE SERVED ON THE USS BROKLYN (1892-1921) IN THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR. HE WAS WOUNDED AND CARVED THEM WHILE CONVALESENCE. HE WAS FROM LONG,ISLAND,NY. THE DETAIL AND QUALITY IS EXCELLENT. CASE IS 25" X 12" X 3". THE GLASS IS PROBABLY ORIGINAL TO THIS PIECE AND THE CASE IS UNDISTRIBUTED. EACH GIG IS 10" LONG. A VERY FINE PIECE OF FOLK ART AND MARITIME HISTORY.
